The BGB has been carrying out the task of guarding the inner peace and order, including border security, prevention of smuggling, women and children and drug trafficking. After the establishment of the 222-year long route, the present duty of the army has increased greatly and the efficiency has increased.

After the liberation of the country, on March 8, the army was renamed BDR (Bangladesh Rifles). On March 7, the national flag was given by the government of Bangladesh as a special recognition of the activities of this force. Bangladesh Rifles was awarded the Independence Award in recognition of its unforgettable contribution to freedom and liberation war.

The brutal killings that took place at the Pilkhana headquarters of the army were killed on February 25-26, 2009. After the tragic incident, the army needs to be restructured. The Border Guard Bangladesh Act, 2010 was passed in the Great National Parliament on December 8, and it came into effect from 20 December. Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina officially launched a new route for the army on January 23, 2011, with the formal flag and the unveiling of the flag at Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
